Examining the doctrines of the so-called "Southern Hemisphere School" - by Ray Harris Introduction One of the great controversies in Feng Shui today is whether to alter the various ancient formulas to suit the Southern Hemisphere (an issue that never surfaced in premodern China). Feng Shui practitioners of equal experience and credibility profoundly disagree about this issue. As far as I am aware it has never been examined in detail and astonishing claims have been made without challenge. The issue arises out of the obvious differences between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. To understand this issue clearly we need to examine their differences. Distribution of solar radiation on the surface of the Earth The angles of the Sun's rays create a band of warm temperature along the ecliptic that is delineated by the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. In addition the Sun's rays create regions of cold temperature at the…

Facts are Facts Some months before the posting of this material Lindy Baxter was asked to explain the parts of her arguments that didn't make sense and to reply to our challenges. "I regret that I shall not reply," wrote Ms. Baxter. "I found the tone of your emails hostile and discourteous." In response, it was acknowledged that she took the wisest approach -- otherwise she would have to substantiate her position. Better to say (like any authoritarian) that we're somehow being mean and cruel for challenging her. Lindy Baxter claims Our Rebutta Science has proved that there is a profound difference between the effects of the ordinary magnet and the Earth's own magnetic force. A magnet is not a geomagnetic system, but a magnet does get used by a wide range of scientific disciplines as a gross analogy of the Earth's magnetic system. A quick glance at the most…

Examining the doctrines of the so-called "Southern Hemisphere School" - by Ray Harris Introduction to the Second Half "What's the good of Mercator's North Poles and Equators, Tropics, Zones, and Meridian Lines?" So the Bellman would cry:and the crew would reply "They are merely conventional signs!" - Lewis Carroll, "The Hunting of the Snark" Remember, the Equator is a Construct Recognize that the division of the Earth into hemispheres is a construct -- a product of human thinking, a mental note agreed upon by members of our civilization. Just as we agree there are Northern and Southern Hemispheres, we also agree there are western and eastern hemispheres -- and all are the result of cartographic conventions, not real phenomena. If you are a native of an equatorial country you are not aware of the Equator, for nothing marks its presence. There are no sudden changes -- the Moon does not…

North Vs South

North Vs South in the Battle for Authentic Feng Shui One of the many questions I regularly get asked about feng shui is, “Should we make changes in feng shui for the Southern Hemisphere”? The assumption being, that since feng shui is from China, and therefore, the Northern Hemisphere, we should perhaps make adaptations to its principles when it is practised here in the Southern Hemisphere. The most common example given for supporting this notion, is a rather addled one, centring on climatic conditions; i.e. that in the Northern Hemisphere, one looks to the South for the warmth of the sun, whereas here in the Southern Hemisphere, it is said we look to the North. It is further postulated, that consequently, changes need to be made to both the Later Heaven Sequence Ba Gua, and the cycling of the Five Elements. While the first climatic based proposition, that in the…
